Compare the installation packages
Compare refinishing as preparation and coating of a retained tub with replacement as removal, a new fixture, reconnection and surround restoration. The cost drivers are therefore different. For a useful price comparison, ask for current proposals based on the same documented tub condition, with each option showing exactly what remains and what changes.
Normalize the proposals
Use the same dimensions, fixtures and enclosure features for both options, then isolate the work that differs. Mark demolition, substrate preparation, connections and finish restoration as included or excluded. Ask each contractor to identify the condition that would change the recommended assembly. This exposes a real scope difference instead of treating two product labels as a complete comparison. Where either option requires specialist fabrication, identify who measures and approves those components before ordering.
Does a lower surface-treatment quote cover the same work?
No. It generally retains the fixture and its layout, while replacement can include disturbed walls and plumbing connections. List those boundaries explicitly, and do not treat this comparison as confirmation of refinishing-only service availability.
